Farewell to Nike, “Tiger Woods” and TaylorMade launched a new golf fashion brand

Following the end of a 27-year partnership with US sportswear giant Nike on January 8, Tiger Woods, then 48 years old, and US Golf equipment company TaylorMade Golf reached a partnership. The new golf fashion brand Sun Day Red was launched. Tiger Woods first partnered with TaylorMade in 2017 and is currently one of six golf stars signed by TaylorMade.
On February 13, Tiger Woods attended the unveiling of the Sun Day Red brand in California, saying, “This is the most right moment in my life… I want to have a brand that I can be proud of in the future. It (Sun Day Red) may not help you achieve further results, but you will look better than you do now.”
On February 15, Tiger Woods teed off at the Genesis Invitational wearing a “Sun Day Red” jersey. It is reported that the brand’s products will be officially available in May this year, initially in the United States and Canada online, with plans to expand the category to women’s and children’s footwear and clothing.
Sun Day Red’s brand logo is a tiger with 15 stripes, the “15″ being the number of majors Woods has won in his career.
The brand name is inspired by Woods’ tradition of wearing a red top during the final round of every golf tournament. “It all started with my mom (Kultida Woods),” Woods said. She believes that, as a Capricorn, red is my color of power, so I have been wearing red to golf tournaments since I was a teenager and have had some victories… My Alma mater, Stanford, is red, and we wear red on the last day of every game. After that, I wore red for every game I played as a professional. Red has become synonymous with me.”

Founded in 1979 and headquartered in Carlsbad, California, TaylorMade is a designer and manufacturer of high performance golf equipment, golf balls and accessories with industry-leading innovations such as the M1 metalwoods, M2 irons and TP5 Golf Balls. In May 2021, TaylorMade was acquired by South Korean private equity firm Centroid Investment Partners for $1.7 billion.
David Abeles, president and CEO of TaylorMade Golf, said: “This is not an endorsement deal, it’s not just about athletes coming in, us building a brand and expecting things to go well. It is a comprehensive, clear and committed partnership. We make every decision together.” Industry media said the partnership marks TaylorMade Golf’s bet that Tiger Woods still has marketing power.
To lead the operation of the Sun Day Red brand, TaylorMade Golf has hired Brad Blankinship, a sports lifestyle branding expert, as president of Sun Day Red. Until last summer, Blankinship worked for Boardriders Group, the parent company of outdoor apparel brands such as Roxy, DC Shoes, Quiksilver and Billabong, From 2019 to 2021, he was responsible for running Rvca, a California sports street brand owned by US brand management company ABG.
Tiger Woods is one of the most successful golfers of all time, at the age of 24 set a record for the youngest major, is the only player to win all four majors in a single year, the heyday is known as the “Jordan of golf.” At the 2019 Masters, he won his 15th major of his career, second only to Jack William Nicklaus for most victories. Over the past decade, though, Tiger Woods’ career has been slowed by injuries. He played just two events on the PGA Tour last year, with his most recent win coming in 2020.
Tiger Woods’ partnership with Nike is one of the most valuable in sports history. The partnership has had a hugely positive impact on both sides: Since 1996 (the year Woods officially started his professional career), Woods has earned more than $600 million through the partnership and helped boost his star power. And Tiger Woods also used his influence to help Nike open up the golf business.
On January 8, Tiger Woods confirmed the end of his 27-year partnership with Nike in a post on social media platform X: “Phil Knight’s passion and vision brought Nike, Nike Golf and me together, and I thank him from the bottom of my heart, as well as the employees and athletes who have worked with him on this journey.” Some people will ask me if there is another chapter and I want to say ‘Yes! ‘”.
It is worth mentioning that in September 2023, Woods and the 10 times Grammy Award winner, the famous American male singer Justin Timberlake cooperation in Manhattan, New York opened a high-end sports entertainment bar T-Squared Social officially opened. The bar is also partnered with NEXUS Luxury Collection, a global real estate development and hotel management company, and 8AM Golf, a golf eco-business.
